The universe revolves around us, yes, yes it does. This may seem contradictory to modern scientists, who have been led to believe that we and life, are just a random accident. This accident of life is often thought to be very short – a couple of cosmic ticks on the grand scale, and that life only exists because the universe is so large. If the laws of physics were just slightly altered then the universe would never be able to support life. A few examples of this is: if gravity were just a tiny bit stronger, then stars would be compacted so that they would burn though their fuel in a few million years rather than the billions of years required to develop life forms; if protons were just 0.2% more massive than they actually are, they would be unstable and atoms wouldn’t exist, so neither would we. According to the cosmologist Andre Linde, there are just too many coincidences. “Physicists don’t like coincidences. They like even less the notion that life is somehow central to the universe.”
But if you say that there are an infinite number of universes with different laws of physics belonging to each, then physicists can still have the no coincidence reality. The only other explanation for all these serendipitous characteristics of our universe is an all powerful fine-tuner – have you heard of it? Its name is God. “If there is only one universe, you might have to have a fine-tuner. If you don’t want God, you’d better have a multiverse.”
As for cosmologist Linde, he contemplates the idea that consciousness itself is one of the fundamental components of the universe, similar to space and time. “But could it be that consciousness, like space and time, may have its own degrees of freedom and can exist without matter?” Linde believes that without consciousness, the universe is dead. So, yes, there is a god and we are It.
