OK, so, this is actually kind of worrying to me. At this point in time, we are getting to find more and more astronomical and astrological coincidences on the notorious date of 12/21/2012. This December, we are either screwed or in for one heck of a ride as far as I'm concerned and I don't know whether to be excited or extremely worried. What brings all this to my attention? This article right here. It goes through a few of the coincidences that fall on the date.
1. We're in for the Age of Aquarius beginning on the day of the winter solstice, aka the 21 of December. This means that we're likely going to be seeing (according to astrology, maybe it's accurate, maybe it's not) more modernist, revolutionary, and humanitarian people according to the description of the Auarius sign.
2. The Mayan calender ends. This does not imply the end of the world, though, because the Mayan calender is a circle and therefore is a cycle that goes on forever. It implies a major change, but we will be starting at one again.
3. The year of the Water Dragon begins shortly thereafter. I have no clue what this implies, but I feel like it's important.
4. The controversial apocalyptic book of Revelation coincides with the conditions set by the Age of Aquarius. The book of Revelation presents a world situation of open-eyes where we care about the situation around us and want to do something about it. This is an Aquarius trait, humanitarianism.
5. EVERYTHING ELSE. If you look for coincidences, they will be there. That's just kind of how it is.
So, yeah, be paranoid if you'd like. Preparation is relative, just like everything else.
You have a good point. Looking back to the number 23, it's obvious that we can find evidence for any conclusion as long as we look for it. One cannot start with a conclusion (i.e., the world will end in 2012) and then search for the "evidence" that drew them to that conclusion (such as the Mayan calendar, prophets, the age of the Aquarius, or even Snooki's pregnancy).
ReplyDeleteI think that this is the true essence of "bad" science--knowing the result before you test is simply not scientific.
What if we're all going to drown because it's the age of Aquarius and Aquarius is associated with water just like the water dragon?? I have to invest in scuba gear.
ReplyDeleteNo, seriously, I like how you're looking at co-incidence hunting as it relates to certain "factual claims", like how the world is "totally going to end in 2012, man". I'd love to see where else facts are co-incidents in disguise- just because one can cite similar claims in support of a claim one is making, it doesn't mean the claim it true (that's what facts and research citations are for).
